"Never tease anything that wants to eat you. My name is April Tate and my blood is the new gold. Vampires and hybrids have overrun my world, once vibrant with life, but now a graveyard of death shrouded in shadows. I fight to survive; I fight for my mother and brother. The journey is full of turns that I am quite unprepared for. And I'm just hoping to make it to the next Vegas sunrise..."

In a post-apocalyptic world, a viral epidemic has wiped out most of the earth’s population, leaving behind few humans but untold numbers of mutated vampires. April is a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in the remains of Las Vegas one year after the outbreak. She has become a ferocious vampire killer and after her family is abducted, she goes searching for them. What she finds is a new breed of vampire, unlike any she has seen before. Unsure of whom she can trust, she discovers that her view of the world is not as black and white as she once thought, and she's willing to bend the rules to rescue her family. But in trying to save them, she may only succeed in bringing her fragile world crashing down around her.

Review:

"No guts, no glory"

Advisory: if you are squeamish this novel is not for you.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.  The sense of duty to fulfill my obligation is my saving grace. The beginning was challenging. The descriptive fighting scenes were impressive, but I was not yet intrigued. For a lover of post-apocalyptic stories it is perfect. That, however is not my preferred genre. Yes, I found April inspiring. She is a machete wielding warrior with a lust for vengeance. She is hardcore and a devout fighter. Even her internal resolve is headstrong. The scenes are graphic and wreak of blood and gore. April is agile and merciless as she decapitates one vampire after another. Truly impressive.

Nearly halfway through the story my attention was captured. It began with a hybrid vampire named Miranda. For the sake of finding her family, April chooses to be led smack dab in the middle of hundreds of vampire hybrids. That is where she meets Rye. It is from that point on that I was entranced.

The rest of the novel was fast-paced and engaging. I read vigorously through the story, admiring April even more as she becomes invincible, and absorbed in the relationship developing between her and Rye. Then a war looms before them and is inevitable as it is detrimental to the hybrids survival. Though she won't hesitate to spill their blood when threatened, April's obviously not so adamant about eliminating the entire race anymore. She does continue to train with zeal when a metamorphic event takes place.....

The prose is simple and easy to follow. The plot is innovative, as well as enticing as it thickens throughout the book. The graphic details are placed meticulously.  Certain elements of surprises brands it unique among it's kind. I cannot finish the series fast enough.

Warning: Will result in obsessive reading and insomnia! ;) Enjoy!

This book receives 4 stars from me ONLY because it had taken a while for me to get past what I felt as monotonous. The further I ventured into the blood spill, the raging wars, the more absorbed I became with every word. The introduction to romance peeked my interest, the well-written plot kept it. With that being said, the rest of the novel is so amazing that it makes up for the initial slow development of the plot.
